Images Portraits of a Master In Action September 28, 2012 admin A series of photos exists of an “encounter” which occurred back in the mid eighties between Derek Jones and kick boxer Bob Sykes. Anyone wanting to know the background story can email me for a further explanation but for the sake of our understanding of reality training I will release a few of these photo’s at a time with suitable commentary. The photo’s were up on the wall in Derek’s gym and conversations were oft had about them. My descriptions are what I can recall of these conversations. This “title page” was given to a dedicated student by Derek. This a really clear illustration of a perfectly applied knee strike. Note the forward movement of Derek’s body as he “chases his center of gravity” and the contraction of Bob’s body. This is the first of three takedowns employed by Derek during the conflict. Bob has come down hard in the center of his back (note how high his legs are) this was a favourite method of Derek’s in order to try and “wind” the opponent as he hit the ground. Following up immediately after the takedown Derek moves to the offside in order to protect his groin from Bob’s formidable kicks. This shot occurred just before the next one. In the back ground is Derek’s student Simon James (Ilesley) anyone wishing to get an eyewitness account of the fight should perhaps contact him. I was not present and am only recounting what I can remember of Derek’s description. Derek was surprised that a kick he landed in Bob’s groin had no effect. Here he is finding out that Bob was wearing a groin protecter and trying to dislodge it. The next series of four photos depict an upright clinch finishing with Derek spinning Bob around and dropping him again on his back. This photo shows Derek just before he strikes Bob with a twist punch. This is Bob just after the said punch. Just a few seconds after the previous photo. I’ve always found the expression on Bob’s face quite telling. Another series of photo’s ending in the third take down by Derek. This is the last in the series Derek is employing a front kick and Bob’s lost his shirt!
